Education
Access to quality education is crucial for Haiti's economic and social development
Access to quality education is crucial for Haiti's economic and social development. The current state of education in Haiti is inadequate for the task at hand. Surveys conducted by the UNDP reveal that the average Haitian aged 25 or older has received only 4.9 years of education, with just 29 percent of the population attending secondary school. These statistics highlight a significant educational gap, putting Haitian youth at risk of lacking the essential knowledge and skills needed to thrive in the workforce and contribute to the country's ongoing progress.
Most schools in Haiti receive minimal government support, lack qualified teachers, and come with a high cost. More than 80 percent of primary schools are privately managed by non-governmental organizations, churches, communities, and for-profit entities, with limited government oversight. School fees often pose a substantial financial burden for low-income families. Additionally, half of public school teachers in Haiti do not possess basic qualifications, and nearly 80 percent have not undergone any pre-service training.
